The U.S. Global Ocean Observing System Steering Committee

The U.S. GOOS Steering Committee was formed at the request of Dr. D. James Baker, Jr., Under Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere at NOAA, on behalf of interested Federal agencies. The group was requested to help in the development of information concerning options on how to match the needs of user groups with the observations and products required to meet those needs, addressing what is working well, what is not working well, the impediments we face at present, and the opportunities we face for the future.

The first meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 16 December 1998 in Washington, DC. The meeting was devoted to review of the Saxton-Weldon response document.

The second meeting of the U.S. GSC was also held in Washington, DC on 11-12 November 1999. The meeting reviewed progress in U.S. GOOS during the previous year.

The third meeting of the U.S. GSC was held in Huntington Beach, CA on 29-30 June 2000. The meeting reviewed the needs of users in the California Bight region. Special presentations were made representatives of regional organizations.

The fourth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held in Charleston, SC on 17-18 January 2001. The meeting objectives were:

The fifth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 1-3 August 2001. PowerPoint presentations and other materials presented at the meeting are available.

The sixth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 17-19 April 2002 in Arlington, VA at the Ocean.US Office.

The seventh meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 9-11 October 2002 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. The meeting documents posted prior to the meeting can be found here.

The eighth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 25-27 June 2003 in Arlington, Virginia at the Ocean.US Office. The agenda, with linked PowerPoint presentations, is now available. The meeting report (including appendices) is available.

The ninth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 12-14 November 2003 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the University of South Florida. The agenda, with linked PowerPoint presentation is now available. The meeting report (including appendices) is available as a pdf.

The tenth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 19-21 May 2004 in Arlington, Virginia at the Ocean.US Office. The meeting report is available with links to the PowerPoint presentations and the appendices (as PDF).

The eleventh meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 3-5 November 2004 in Dallas, Texas at the Stoneleigh Hotel. The meeting report is available with links to the PowerPoint presentations and the appendices (as PDF).

The twelfth meeting of the U.S. GSC was held 8-10 February 2006 in Charleston, SC at the NOAA Coastal Services Center. The meeting report is available with links to the PowerPoint presentations.
