Lavaca Bay's shallower sediments
targeted for mercury pollution cleanup

insetAn Alcoa facility discharged mercury into Lavaca Bay in the late 1960s. The portion of the bay within the dotted line was placed on the EPA Superfund list in March 1994 because of elevated mercury in edible fish and shellfish. On the map at 15 locations in the bay, sediment accumulation is shown in parentheses (as centimeters per year); the other number is the station number. Solid waste from the plant was stored in the above-ground containment ponds. Back to the article.
