Contours showing heat content of the oceans derived from a computer model of global-ocean general circulation. The model simulated the state of the ocean from 1960-1990 using observed winds and XBT data. Heat content, which is the vertically integrated temperature from 0 to 500 meters depth, provides information about how climate can change over periods of years to decades.
