On the cover: Black and white version of a satellite image
of the Levantine Basin taken by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on
the Nimbus-7 satellite on July 14, 1979. The CZCS generates images of ocean
color, an indicator of the amount of phytoplankton in the water. The triangular
Nile Delta is clearly visible just left of the center of the image. The
narrow band of white and grey regions emerging from the delta represents
the river's outflow, which flows east along the edge of the Levantine Basin
and is visible along the coast of Israel. Before the construction of the
Aswan High Dam in 1964-1965, the Nile River discharge was much larger and
supported a rich harvest of fish and shellfish. This image was processed
by Gert van Dijken under a fellowship in Remote Sensing of the Oceans provided
by the University of Maryland Sea Grant and NASA.
