The ocean science bowlers are on their way to College Station, and beyond!

The Department of Oceanography and Texas high schools are teaming up to kick off the International Year of the Oceans with the 1998 Ocean Sciences Bowl. Texas A&M will host nine teams of students in a regional competition to be held on the College Station campus on February 28, 1998.

The winning team will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national competition this April. The United States Ocean Sciences Championship Team then travels to Lisbon, Portugal, to compete with students from around the world for top honors in ocean science.

Texas teams will raise their own money to cover costs associated with participating in the regional competition, but from then on winning teams' expenses will be paid by bowl sponsors.

The ocean sciences bowl is organized and sponsored in part by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education, its member organizations including Texas A&M University, and the National Marine Educators Association. Organizers hope the contest will broaden awareness and understanding of the latest ocean research, as well as the ocean's critical impact on global climate, economic well-being, history, and culture.

If you missed the chance to sign up for the Ocean Sciences Bowl this year, don't worry! The bowl is planned to be an annual event. Watch these pages in 1998 for announcements concerning next year's competition.

The Texas schools that will participate in the regional competition this February are A&M Consolidated (College Station), Brenham High School, Bryan High School, Eastland High School, Madisonville High School, Martin's Mill High School, Round Rock High School, Ranger High School, and Incarnate Word Academy (Corpus Christi).

Aubrey Anderson and Sayed El-Sayed retire

The Department of Oceanography bids farewell to Dr. Sayed El-Sayed and Dr. Aubrey Anderson, both professors who have retired this year.

Dr. El-Sayed joined the biological oceanography faculty in 1960 and served as chairman of the biological section from 1991 to 1996. He and his wife, Nan, have built a house on Whidbey Island, Washington, where they can be closer to the other members of their family.

Dr. Anderson joined the physical oceanography faculty in 1984, and served as chairman of the physical section from 1994 to 1997. He and his wife, Linda, will stay in College Station.

Dr. Anderson and Dr. El-Sayed have chaired or co-chaired a total of 29 graduate committees, and both have been active leaders in the department and in their fields. The Department of Oceanography recognized their tremendous contributions and dedication in a farewell celebration on December 2, 1997.
