What is Quarterdeck?

quar-ter-deck. n. 1 : the stern area of a ship's upper deck. 2 : a part of a deck on a naval vessel set aside by the captain for ceremonial and official use.

Quarterdeck Magazine is a 24-page, tri-annual publication produced by the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University. All the articles are written by professors, staff, students and alumni of the Department of Oceanography.

Our readers include teachers, high school students, college students, college professors, oceanographers, marine scientists, ocean professionals, alumni ... and others who are interested in learning about the ocean.

Content

The two main articles in most issues of Quarterdeck focus on current research by Department of Oceanography personnel. The first article reports the research; the second gives educational, background information to help readers understand the first article.

Other recurring features include:

  • Cruise News: A report from one of the many research cruises conducted by the department.
  • Coast Lines: Focuses on research pertinent to Texas (and other) coasts.
  • Oceanography Graduate Council (or OGC): A contribution from a oceanography graduate student about an issue that concerns students.
  • Student Research: A synopsis of recent graduates' thesis or dissertation research.
  • Profile: A "getting to know you" article about a new faculty member.

Mission
