Application Process for M.S. or Ph.D. Programs

Although there is not an official application deadline, applicants for fall semester admissions are encouraged to submit all material by January 1 to be considered for the full range of available assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships. Admissions and funding decisions are typically made in March.

The majority of new M.S. and Ph.D. students begin the degree program during the fall semester, however, we routinely admit students to begin in the spring semester. The deadline for applications for spring semester admissions is September 1.

Students are strongly encouraged to contact potential faculty advisors in their field of interest. We do not use GRE scores and/or GPA as sole criteria for graduate admission but, rather, we will evaluate your application package in its entirety, including letters of reference and personal essay (Statement of Purpose). All accepted applicants will automatically be given full consideration for financial support, including both research and teaching assistantships as well as fellowships. There is no separate application for assistantships or fellowships. Selected domestic students will be invited to visit the department during our annual recruitment weekend.

M.S. and Ph.D. Required Application Materials:

  • Apply Texas application including statement of purpose
  • GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores
  • TOELF or IELTS scores (International applicants only)
  • 3 letters of Recommendation
  • Undergraduate and Graduate (if applicable) transcripts

Once an applicant has submitted their Apply Texas application, they will need to submit additional required materials through  We encourage applicants to complete the “Departmental Data Sheet” first. This will allow faculty to view any submitted application materials.
