  • Representation of high-latitude Southern Ocean in global climate models
  • Impact of Antarctic sea-ice and convection on deep-ocean properties and circulation
  • Sea-ice and convection induced variability of deep-western boundary currents
  • Atmospheric boundary layer over heterogeneous sea ice
  • Model representation of oceanic convective plumes under Southern Ocean sea ice
  • Impact of Antarctic orographic effects on model representation of coastal polynyas
  • Development of open-ocean polynyas in high-resolution Earth system models

Current Projects/Collaborations:

  • Center for Space and Earth Science (CSES)/National Science Education Center (NSEC)/Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL): Project “Open-Ocean Polynyas and Bottom Water Formation in a High-Resolution Earth System Model (ESM) Simulation”, includes extended visits of Ph.D. student Prajvala Kurtakoti at LANL. Collaborators: Milena Veneziani, Wilbert Weijer.
  • Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M): Collaboration on “High Frequency and Mesoscale Variability of Sea Ice in High-Resolution MPI Ocean Model (MPIOM)” and “Propagation of Deep- and Bottom-Water Anomalies in High-Resolution versus Low-Resolution MPIOM”.
