  • Deep/subsurface biosphere
  • Geomicrobiology
  • Future of deep-sea mineral resources

I am interested in linking patterns in the distribution and activity of microorganisms with changes in the distribution of carbon, iron, and other elements in the deep ocean. Currently, I am working on a project which aims to close knowledge gaps about what happens when active hydrothermal vents become inactive, hoping to answer questions about the mechanisms and biogeochemical effects of microbial succession at these “biological oases".
