My research focuses on the distribution of dissolved trace elements in the Pacific Ocean as part of a collaboration with the international GEOTRACES program. As part of the GEOTRACES Pacific Meridional Transect research cruise, my work explores the concentration gradients, isotopic signatures, and particle size fractionation of dissolved trace metals throughout the Pacific water column. This research will attempt to further our understanding of metal dynamics and composition in Pacific water masses, hydrothermal vent plumes, oxygen depleted zones, continental inputs, and oligotrophic regions. One portion of the project that I am currently investigating is to understand the fate and removal of Fe and Mn as hydrothermal plume waters migrate away from Loihi Seamount using speciation and isotope measurements. our lab employs ICP-MS instrumentation to quantify our metals including Fe, Zn, Mn, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu, Co, and Sc preceded by a SeaFAST Autoanalyzer preconcentration method. This is an NSF-funded project conducted by an NSF Graduate Research Fellow.
